Things To Do at Damara Mopane Lodge

Damaraland in Namibia boasts wide open spaces, breathtaking rock formations and African wildlife which are adapted to the desert.
Traveling from Okahandja to Swakopmund, you will find the Spitzkoppe, a small cluster of mountains rising from the flat gravel plains. The highest of these is 1 728m above sea level and towers 600m above the surrounding land area.

A little further to the north is the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain, which measures 2 573m at its highest point. With a base of 30km by 23km, this mass of granite was declared a national monument in 1951, because it contains the world’s richest galleries of rock art, dating from 1000 to 6000 years ago. The most famous of these being the White Lady.

In the remote west of Damaraland are two craters, which can only be visited with a guide – the Messum and the Doros Craters. These ancient volcanoes show evidence of early human habitation.

To the east of Khorixas the remnants of ancient lava flows had been eroded and what is left is a striking pinnacle of rock, called the Vingerklip – meaning “rock finger”.

Twyfelfontein, meaning “doubtful spring” was formerly known as Uri-Ais. The world’s greatest concentrations of rock art were painted on the slopes and boulders of these hills and in 2007 it was declared a World Heritage Site.

Not far from Twyfelfontein, are the Organ Pipes – hundreds of tall, angular columns of dolorite – forming a formation resembling organ pipes. Just around the corner is the so-called Burnt Mountain. This heap of black shale amidst the dominant sandstone, appears to have a glow, as if on fire, in the early morning or late afternoon light.

To the west of Khorixas lies the Petrified Forest. Here you’ll see ancient tree logs, about 260 million years old, that were carried to this place by a river and imbedded in the sandstone, which has since eroded away. The sand created the ideal conditions for the cells of the wood to be replaced by silica and become petrified. .
