Things To Do at Okapuka Safari Lodge

Windhoek is Namibia’s largest city and the capital. It is located in central Namibia and almost exactly at the geographical centre of the country. The city was developed at the site of a permanent hot spring after Jonker Afrikaner, captain of the Orlam, settled there in 1840 and built a stone church for his community. Unfortunately, the settlement was destroyed during the wars between the Nama and Herero tribes.

In 1890, when the territory was colonised by the German Empire, the protective corps - the Schutztruppe - were stationed at Windhoek to create a buffer between the warring Nama and Herero peoples. The springs provided water for the cultivation of produce and grains. Colonial Windhoek was founded in 1890 when the foundation of the fort was built.
Various buildings were erected during the following years, some of which can still be seen and visited.

At the end of World War I, the German colonial era came to an end, but Namibia was placed under administration of South Africa and only gained independence in 1990.
