When to visit the Namib Desert

The Namib desert is dramatic all year so if you can't control the dates of your visit here is some information to help you make the most out of your visit whenever you venture into the Namib desert via Sesriem.

Best months
April to August, Namibian winter temperatures while still very hot during the day are much cooler than the summer months. most of the time there is clear blus skies. The downside is that this is the busiest tourist season so booking in advance is advisable and prices are higher.

Shoulder months
February to March, Sept and October, being a desert the weather is still dry in these periods but temperatures are climbing and winds can often whip across the desert from either the cold atlantic ocean or the central highlands.
Generally a quieter time to visit, accommodation in the park can still book up well in advance.

Hot Season
November, December and January, Namibias hot summer sun really heats up so a trip to Namibia during this time requires careful planning. Days and nights are hot to extremely hot in the desert, however it is the time of year when you are most likely to have clouds in the sky which can lead to some dramatic and beautiful storms in the surrounding mountains making for spectacular photographs (see photo below taken in January).
As for visiting Sossusvlei and Deadvlei at this time of year you do need to be staying inside the park to get into the desert early as the sun rises very quickly leaving little time for any dimension to photographs.
